This is a great product and a good solution to a very current issue.

what a brilliant answer to such an important problem around the world. One of the most innovative products I have seen yet on this sight which also deals with a major cause for concern. You should be very pleased with yourself, well done.

What is cross contamination?

How does one SEE germs on your hand? Does it coate you hand with something that you have to wash off again later? Sorry, good idea but have no idea how it works...

Well there are 2 UV lights situated within a unique casing just above the washbasin. These UV lights are set at the UV germicial frequency which is a setting that illuminates all germs on the hands. This is an advantage to the user as they can visually see and eliminate all bacteria present quickly and effectively and so reduce the rates of infection travelling from one source to another. This product is designed for hospitals where contamination is a very important issue & may also be the difference between life and death to those patients that are most vulnerable. So in this case I am trying to take a complicated issue & create a simple and very effective answer/product to a major issue.

not all bacteria on your hands is bad...we need some to maintain healthy skin. It is impossible to eliminte all bacteria through soap and water - I fear this could just lead to a larger OCD population....but clean hands are ALWAYS a good thing....some people don't wash their hand upon leaving the rest room, and its disgusting...you know who you are.

What does it do with rings and things that some medical personal refuse to remove? I have had this issue occur with other staff... This is a WONDERFUL CONCEPT and you get my highest accolades here.

What is it with the current trend towards rediculous levels of cleanliness. Considering the crap people eat everyday something like contamination from bacteria should be the last thing on your mind.

"Inspection can be assisted by UV as some strains of Salmonella and Shigella, will metabolize MUG to produce 4-methylumbelliferone, which fluoresces under long wave ultraviolet light." This is bad design. Only SOME bacteria will flouresce and be made visible under UV light. It is actually useless, if not possibly harmful, in any medical professional setting because it simply trains people to wash away any flouresence and to not adhere to proper hand-washing procedures. Even in a restaurant setting it would be minimally useful.

Oh for crying out loud!! If you've washed you hands that's enought. If you havn't washed your hands your probably not going to notice. This is compleatly rediculous. Might catch on in America though!:-)

This Product is meant to be used in hospitals where cross contamination of bacteria is a matter between life and death of a patient. The problem at the moment is that not enough attention is being brought to this area. It is a market that is important and too much neglect within this area has caused so many deaths that should not have happened especially in europe. If you take a look at James Dyson for instance one of his new products is entering this market to tackle the issue of cross conamination. So if the there is no market for this product then why is one of the leading innovative Design companies investing in this area which is totally opposite to the market they currently stand in?

maybe make a sink that takes pictures of all who walk by without washing, post pictures on a large screen in full view of everybody. the shame of seeing your own picture will make you very sure to wash hands every time

jkae! Ha ha ha...what an idea to screw the happiness of dirty people! I think this technology already is finding its application at a very fast rate. I'm not sure if that will make it very compatible with a design of a wash basin. I mean does is have to be a wash basin? Can't it be a hi-tech finger bowl before a meal?

only good for hospitals

(Sat, 03 Jul 2010 02:45:25 GMT) Mike Nagnik says

true, hospitals and other disease-ridden places would be the only ones who would really use this.
