Origami Cell Phone

The screen uses an origami paper folding technique to expand and collapse automatically as it is opened and closed. It addresses the need for a larger displays on cell phones without sacrificing the small form factor. Photoshop work by Joshua Palmer.

Does the screen crease or roll up at the corners? If not, then how does the fold out screen retain a rigid form? Maybe you should have a pull-out scroll display instead?

be nice to get a pda with this. or a laptop with a huge screen. could it be made hi-def?

Right now, the screen technology does not allow for rapid-refresh rate and its not high-def. But I predict it should be possible in the next 10 yrs.

I don't think people could make it now, but maybe in a few years they can. Then i'd definatly get one!

why not dispense with the phone part and have the whole thing on an origami touch screen ?

I like that idea. But I dont like touch screens because of their poor tactile feedback.

Durability isn't there. I wouldn't use one if it was free, because I'd be worried about my origami screen ripping or breaking or otherwise being mangled. Flip phones are already pretty bad for durability with only one moving part. Adding everything for a self-folding and unfolding screen would make this phone a nightmare.

I'd buy it now, and I am sure it can be made now... price ~ $1k... WORTH IT!
